Addressing the student housing crisis.
In 2021, over 1,000 UCSD students were placed on the housing waitlist and forced to look for off-campus housing. Two years later, students were still struggling to find affordable housing. Something needed to be done.
Why "houseless"?
Houselessness, or the “unhoused”, is a term now preferred over “homeless”, recognizing that “home” isn’t just a physical structure, but one that also embraces social connections in a community. Using “houseless” seeks to foster greater respect when discussing individuals living without a fixed address.
Family issues & lack of affordable housing were the most common causes of houselessness.
Who supports you?
For many of us, friends and family are where we find our support. But what happens if you find yourself alone? Students who were left without any financial support said felt as if they were in "survival mode", having to juggle classes while bearing the burden of making a living for themselves.
